Abstract: Objective

To explore the correlation between sleep time and the risk of diabetes in elderly hypertensive patients in rural areas of Anqing.

Methods

In this study, eight townships were randomly selected by multi-stage stratified random sampling method in rural areas of Anqing City from July to September 2020, and the relevant information of the respondents was obtained through questionnaires and physical examination. Logistic regression model was used to analyze the relationship between sleep time and diabetes in hypertensive patients.

Results

A total of 2 339 subjects were included in the final analysis, and the prevalence of diabetes was 12.2%. Among them, the proportions of people whose night sleep time was less than 4 h, 4~8 h, and more than 8 h were 8.1%, 73.0%, and 18.9%, respectively. After adjustment of age, gender and other related factors, compared with people who sleep for 4~8 hours, people who sleep longer (> 8 h) had a higher risk of diabetes, and the difference was statistically significant (OR= 1.52, 95%CI:1.10~2.11,P= 0.011).

Conclusion

Among hypertensive patients in rural areas, excessive sleep time at night is significantly associated with the risk of diabetes. It is necessary to strengthen publicity and education in the special population, arrange sleep time reasonably, develop good living habits, and reduce the risk of diabetes.
